Facts and figures…
Santa Severina is one of the most evocative villages in Calabria, undoubtedly one of the most reputed within the Crotone area. It is located about 26 km. away from Crotone.
Santa Severina is situated on a cliff, 326 m. above sea level, in the middle of the Neto river valley. It is called the “ship of stone” due to its peculiar position.
S. Severina was probably founded by the Enotri, an Italic population settled in the area before the Greek colonization. In ancient times, the village was called Siberene.
During the first decades of the last century, the eminent archaeologist Paolo Orsi moved to this spectacular place with the aim of studying art and culture patterns that marked the past of the area.
Both Mediterranean and European great civilizations have influenced the history of Santa Severina, leaving traces, archaeological finds and monuments which are now part of the heritage belonging to the whole humankind.
The concentration of valuable artefacts, monuments and cultural heritage found within the area is absolutely uncommon. The old town centre is a place that stirs up strong emotions, allowing the spirit to reconcile with both space and time. Santa Severina, listed among the “Most beautiful villages in Italy”, is also the seat of a Liceo specializing in classical studies and of the Academy for foreign studies, as well as being one of the most popular destination for culture tourism in Calabria.
Today, Santa Severina also provides an amazing natural stage hosting prestigious events at regional level, notably artistic, theatrical and music performances.
