Fact and figures...
Sila Piccola
Located between the provinces of Crotone and Catanzaro, Sila Piccola is one of the three areas forming the Sila National Park. The territory coincides with the southern part of the Sila plateau, and is characterized by an evocative and scenic landscape. The area also features several river valleys, some of which stand out for their pristine and unpolluted environment, like Soleo’s and Tacina’s, clothed with pastures and lush vegetation.
Sila Piccola supports a rich botanical biodiversity, ranging from Mediterranean vegetation to dense coniferous forests, resembling Northern Europe landscapes, and to expanses of chestnut, alder and ash trees. Woods of Laricio pines are found at altitudes exceeding 1100 m., while beech, sometimes associated with silver fir trees (like on Mount Gariglione), dominates at higher elevations.
The area is home to animal species typical to the Apennine territory, like wolves, foxes, hares and wild boars. The presence of the rare hooded crow is also noteworthy.
The Sila Piccola is a year-round popular destination. In winter, tourists can practise sports like skiing and cross-country skiing in the pleasant villages of Palumbo and Mancuso, while trekking hiking, horse riding, mountain bike cycling are feasible in other periods of the year, along a net of interesting itineraries. The enchanting framework of the Ampollino lake, set admist coniferous forests, is the ideal location for windsurf, fishing and canoe lovers.
