Guided visit to the Marine Area and Acquarium -The Marine Protected Area
Covering 13.500 ha and stretching along 36 Km of coastline, Capo Rizzuto Marine Protected Area is the largest Marine Protected Area in Europe. It is also renown at national level for the high environmental value.
The seabed alternates sand with rocks covered by posidonia and madrepore. The cliffs caves offer a safe shelter to marine species like octopus, lobster, date mussel and many others, while grouper, moray and the colourful parrot fish –typical of tropical seas- are often spotted in the depth of the sea.
The seabed also features a true submerged museum, housing remains of ancient villas, wrecks, amphoras and pillars having a long and fascinating history.
In some areas regulated with less restrictive measures, activities like sport fishing with fishing lines and snorkelling are permitted. It is also possible to take part in diving experiences under the supervision of expert instructors, which are organized by the diving centre jointly with the technical and tourism fishing division operating at the Costa Tiziana Hotel. A video introduction to the activities and programmes undertaken within the marine protected area will also be provided weekly by didactic operators and marine biologists.
Moreover, children (4-13 years of age) will be involved in amusing school activities both on the Hotel’s private beach and at the Acquarium, under the guidance of a marine biologist.
Information points within the structure are rich in useful information suitable for a better understanding of the Marine area’s stunning environment, which deserves to be preserved as the natural jewel of Ionian Coast.
The entertainment staff, in association with the mini-club will suggest the “have fun and learn” programme, especially conceived for children with the aim of enabling them to get acquainted with the amazing sea world, learning how to protect and respect it. Whether taking part in individual or group activities, children will be given a small gift related to the protected area: the castleland tale to be coloured, an interactive DVD, posters featuring the grouper, the seahorse or the barracuda.
